A Chicago bathroom remodel budget includes both bigger and smaller ticket items. It's good to be aware of which things are which as you and/or your partner begin to decide how that budget will sort itself out.
Plan for Bigger-Ticket Items in a Chicago Bathroom Remodel Budget
So, here are some of those potential budget breakers. If you know you are going to need or want to implement some (or all of these) in your own bathroom renovation, and if budget is a concern, speak to your design-build team about your concerns at the forefront. They may have suggestions and solutions that will put your mind at ease.
Redesigning the layout or configuration
While it's true for kitchens as well, there is no doubt that redesigning the configuration or layout of your bathroom will cost more. Typically, it involves more demolition labor, as well as added costs for new plumbing and electrical.
That being said, if a better layout or design enhances the flow, this is a worthwhile investment. Not only will you appreciate the improved version, it will also be better when it comes to your home's future resale value.
The tile work - how much, which type and details
If you're taking the time and effort to remodel you're bathroom, you want to choose the best tile and most stylish layouts/accents your budget can afford. Tiles run the gamut in terms of price. Simple ceramic tiles with minimal accents are more affordable, while natural stone tiles are more expensive.
Similarly, the way the tiles are laid out, the level of artistry involved for a particular pattern or accent row, or the labor involved in an intricate mosaic will also drive the price up. There are ways to cut corners, however.
Ask your tile supplier to show you discounted or discontinued tile options to see if any strike your fancy, and look for mosaic patterns that are laid out in sheets. Little tips like these will give you a luxury look for a more modest price tag.
Plumbing fixtures and features
If you're installing a new steam shower, adding a soak tub or replacing all of the plumbing fixtures, your final price can add zeros faster than you can calculate them. Make sure the extra expenses are being spent on truly quality products.
Not all designer fixtures are equal, so make sure you're purchasing stylish fixtures that are durable, work well (adequate water pressure?!?) and can handle normal wear-and-tear. This is something your design-builder should help you with.
Upgrades or unexpected events
Any upgrades you make will come attached with an extra price tag. This price tag can be higher than expected at at times, especially when you're remodeling a bathroom that is 30-, 40- or more years old. Sometimes, we come across shocking scenarios when we open up the walls in an older home - things we couldn't predict but must be remedied. This is why we recommend adding a 10% to 15% emergency fund to the total budget.
