Bathroom Remodeling Chicago: Choosing Fixtures

Ron Nanberg | Tue, Oct 14, 2014 | Bathroom Remodeling

keller_bathroom2Choosing fixtures for your Chicago bathroom remodeling project can get overwhelming pretty quick. You may think you know exactly what you want, only to get swept away into the infinite swell of possibilities at a local showroom. It can feel like a grand "Choose Your Own Adventure" gone awry if you don't have a little method involved in your madness.

Choosing Bathroom Fixtures for North Shore Remodeling Projects

Perhaps the best way to go about it is to analyze your style and go from there. Once you know the general "look" you want, you'll be able to go fixture by fixture, selecting the styles that work best for the space.

The following is a glimpse of the most typical fixtures selected by our clients as well as a few luxury bells and whistles you may want to contemplate.

Toilets. Let's get the dirty business out of the way first. The toilet is the primary reason for the bathroom, after all. Standard toilets are 14- to 15-inches high. However, most people prefer slightly higher toilets as they are more comfortable. Consider toilets that are 16- to 18-inches high for comfort. These are also recommended for universal bathroom designs. Shorter toilets may be a smart choice if you'll have small children around for a while, although a little stool will suffice until they're bigger.

Tip: While colored toilets may look good in your bathroom now, consider that colors trend and white/neutral commodes are often the best option for longevity's sake.

Sinks. Consider the function of the sink before choosing the style. Some sinks are higher maintenance than others and may be better suited for powder or guest baths. Vessel sinks are a good example of this. Cleaning around a vessel sink is similar to cleaning around a top-mounted kitchen sink; you have to worry about grime build-up where the sink meets the counter. Pedestal sinks are an attractive option for smaller bathroom spaces or to show off fancy tile work. Oval and rectangular sinks are always nice because they provide a larger area for splashing water.

Sink Faucets. Here, your bathroom style will determine what your faucets look like. Typically, faucets attach to the counter top, however, wall-mounted faucets are increasingly popular. Again, you want to think about maintenance. If you have small children, consider whether you want a single lever or double lever faucet.  Top lever faucets are easier to use and less likely to scald a child.

Shower Faucets. The world has blown wide open for shower faucets. From rain shower heads to separate body sprayers, your shower can become a steamy, spa-like massage chamber. We recommend incorporating at least one hand-held unit. They come in handy for yourself, your kids and the dog, and they make cleaning the shower much easier.

The Extras. Then there are all the extra fixtures that can take your bathroom to the next level. These include things like steam showers, colorful lights, gas fireplaces and audio/video options.
