Kitchen Remodeling: Cabinet Refacing vs. Cabinet Replacing

Kitchen Remodeling Cabinet RefacingCabinet refacing is getting a lot of press these days due to its affordability and eco-friendly advantages. However, if you don't select the right company, you will end up paying almost as much as you would have for brand-new cabinets and the finished results run the risk of being inconsistent or downright unattractive. Often, cabinet refacing ends up being more of a band-aid than a high-quality upgrade to your newly remodeled kitchen.

What is cabinet refacing?

Cabinet refacing, also called cabinet resurfacing, can be a desirable option for clients who are on a very tight budget, and who aren't interesting in changing the basic "skeleton" of their kitchen design. The body of the cabinets will remain the same, but the cabinet doors are replaced and the existing framework will be resurfaced to match. For this reason, it is also considered an eco-friendly option because you aren't tearing out perfectly good cabinetry and throwing it into a landfill.

That being said, you can always request that your cabinetry be preserved and moved outside the home, where it can be picked up by non-profit organizations, such as Habitat for Humanity or The Salvation Army, who will re-purpose them for someone else's home.

Cabinet refacing is not an option when:

  • Your cabinet framework is in poor shape
  • The framework is severely water damaged
  • You plan to re-design your kitchen cabinet layout

Also, if you want to design new kitchen cabinets with pullout drawers and shelves, new hinges and hardware, etc., the final cost will not be as affordable as many companies may lead you to believe. Make sure you receive a final quote, including all of the bells and whistles, before you opt for cabinet resurfacing as the total may be an unpleasant surprise.

What are the advantages of replacing kitchen cabinets?

There are several advantages to selecting brand-new cabinets for your kitchen remodel.

Have it your way. When you opt for replacing your kitchen cabinets, you have complete control over the design. We recommend meeting with a kitchen design specialist. Professional designers may be able to see your kitchen in a totally different way, which can lead to a  more attractive and efficient design.

Consistency. A high-quality cabinet refacing job is one thing but, unless you are very familiar with the company's work, you run the risk of cabinet doors and framework that aren't completely consistent. If they don't use high-quality materials, the cabinets' durability will suffer as well.

Custom options. Standard kitchen countertop height is 36-inches. If you reface your cabinets, this will remain the same. However, many families prefer their cabinets to be higher or lower, for greater ease and comfort. If you are interested in exploring universal design concepts, customized cabinetry will accommodate everyone and will allow you to age safely in place.

There are situations where cabinet refacing makes sense, but we recommend you take the time to explore your options carefully. Contact Kitchens & Baths Unlimited to discuss kitchen cabinet options for your upcoming kitchen remodel.
