The number one question Kitchen designers and contractors get asked is how much does a kitchen remodel or renovation cost? It is kind of like asking a car salesman how much does a car cost. It isn’t a quick easy answer to just throw out, here’s why…there are a wide range of prices depending on the model, amenities and upgrades. It is the same when it comes to a kitchen remodel. For example, the type of cabinetry you select can have a big impact on the bottom line. The difference from one type of cabinet to the next could be as much as 25-30%.
Types of Cabinetry: Stock, Semi-Custom and Custom
Stock Cabinetry:
Least expensive of the three cabinet types. You can walk-into a big box store and walk out with them. This is for a tighter budget and more times than not the do-it-yourselfer. Within a stock cabinet the customers will have limited color selections, finishes, wood species and styles to select from.
Semi-Custom Cabinetry:
Nice middle-of-the-road option that has limitations with colors and styles, but still lets the designer create your dream kitchen in having the flexibility to modify sizes by adjusting heights, widths and depths of cabinetry. Therefore a semi-custom cabinet has some custom capabilities, but yet still some of the restrictions that a stock line may have.
Fully Custom Cabinetry:
This is definitely a no-holds-barred type of approach. If you can dream it, then a truly custom cabinet manufacturer can build it. It is a build to suit approach. Any color, any wood specie and size or shape. This is definitely what you want to incorporate into your forever home.
Just like the car analogy, once you start to add in all of the amenities and upgrades to your cabinetry the price will adjust accordingly. If you want to select a special paint color, some nice interior features that help with organization and upgrade the cabinet box from particle board to plywood, then price-wise you will find yourself dealing with a custom cabinet over the semi-custom cabinet. Your professional kitchen designer will help you with staying within your budget and determining which style of cabinetry is the best for your situation.
Labor: From Demolition to Dream Kitchen
Labor is another piece of the puzzle that varies from one kitchen remodel to the next. Like a fingerprint, each kitchen and its scope is different from the next. For example, was your home built in 1910 and has galvanized plumbing and plaster walls? Or was your home built in 2010 and has PVC drains and copper plumbing? These two examples alone produce two very different labor prices. Are you reconfiguring your space and moving walls and appliances around or are you putting everything back in the same place? Again, these are two totally different scenarios.
