As we have mentioned many times before, Kitchens & Baths Unlimited has been designing kitchens for Highland Park residences for the last 30 years and enjoying every minute of it. Creating kitchens that become part of your home, fit your family and fit your lifestyles is what it is all about. What our professional design team has consistently found is Highland Park predominantly trends to the contemporary and transitional side of things. The traditional style choice is not the road heavily traveled in the Highland Park area. That said, let’s talk about what is popular now.
In kitchens, grey and white color palettes dominate. Typically a clean bright white is the trend. Often a matte painted finish is desired when choosing a transitional door style whereas a high lacquered finish is a contemporary route. A door style that is transitional has clean lines and is minimalistic, but with some detail versus a slab or flat door style (with no detail) leans more towards the contemporary.
White and grey trends don’t stop with the kitchen cabinetry alone. It also travels into the counter top selections. Highland Park clients have made selections ranging from marble to quartzite and everything in between. The big draw initially is marble due to its natural beauty. Marble selections such as Calcutta Gold or Statuary are white with grey veining. That said, marble is not a practical counter top selection for a kitchen. It is a softer porous stone that can stain, etch and scratch. This deters most homeowners and pushes them to search out an alternative. More durable options for kitchen counter tops would be granite, quartz or quartzite. Still remaining at the top, the most commonly chosen counter is granite. Approximately 60% of our kitchen remodels in Highland Park are granite. Quartzite is starting to give granite a run for its money though. Quartzite is a durable stone similar to granite that makes it a sound choice for a kitchen remodel as well.
Whites and greys are also a popular backsplash selection. White subway tile, white porcelain or ceramic tiles or full height stone backsplashes that match the counter tops lead the pack in backsplash materials. It wasn’t too long ago that beige tumbled marble was the way to go. The nice thing about both of these trends is that they both are neutral and easy to live with for the long haul. The full height stone splash usually is more of a contemporary option. It is easy to clean and maintain as dealing with grout is eliminated. However, the costs are typically higher.
Another area to introduce grey into a kitchen is through the paint color. Sometimes a soft gray that is almost white is chosen and other times it could be a nice Benjamin Moore Smoked Truffle. At Kitchens & Baths Unlimited our professional kitchen designers assist you with all material selections from start to finish helping you create your dream kitchen.
