Often, homeowners become so focused on countertops and shower tile patterns when planning a Chicago bathroom remodeling project, they forget about flooring. Or, flooring selections become a second-tier feature selection.
If you choose well, bathroom flooring adds another layer of texture, dimension and visual interest to your design, so take the opportunity to do something a little out of the ordinary.
Creative Flooring Ideas For Chicago Bathroom Remodeling Projects
You can still keep your current plan for tile or hardwood, but you can take that play and run with it. Here are a handful of ideas to get your creative design juices flowing. You can also schedule a consultation with a professional design-build team, who can show you examples of creative bathroom flooring options for further inspiration.
Add Accent Tiles. If you're planning on using large natural stone or ceramic tiles, consider adding accent tiles. They can be as simple or ornate as you want, but even the addition of small, mosaic-sized accent tiles can make a huge impact. If you feel bold, add a splash of color. If you're more conservative, choose a neutral color that will be easy to blend with future bathroom design evolutions.
Use River Stones. As bathrooms designs have morphed into private home spas, the use of natural elements has been popularized. Not only do river stones look beautiful, they also provide slip-resistant protection around shower and bath areas. Consider adding a border - 12- or 18-inches deep - around the perimeter of the bathroom. Or, you can create a winding pattern that mimics a natural stream bed.
Consider a Mosaic Border. You can use the same idea of a stone border but substitute beautiful mosaic tiles instead. They work as a perimeter border or you can set an outline further in from the wall, flanked by the primary flooring material on either side. Mosaic tiles can also be set in a variety of patterns so flooring patterns can be as intricate or artistic as your imagination.
Install Re-Claimed Wood. Are you wary of using hardwood in the bathroom because you fear it will be damaged by water? The good news is that well-finished hardwood planks or ultra-durable engineered hardwoods are very durable. The use of area rugs where water splashes are most likely is usually protection enough to keep them looking their best. Reclaimed lumber, however, is another option. The wood has already been tested by Mother Nature and Father Time, yielding a weathered and rustic appearance. It makes a gorgeous bathroom flooring choice and is an eco-friendly option to boot.
Heated Flooring. While this upgrade isn't visible, it is certainly tangible. Heated floors are the best bathroom invention since plumbed toilets! Stepping out of a shower or bath, or into the bathroom in the wee hours, and having bare feet met with warm flooring is a true luxury. Plus, it will keep those hardwood floors dryer...
