What's your favorite part of cleaning the toilet? For us, the toilet bowl isn't even the real issue; our household grumbles about that whole base portion of the toilet that connects to the floor. It's cumbersome and there's all those little screw caps and contours to get around. Are you with us?
If so, you may be a candidate for a wall-mounted toilet in your Chicago bathroom remodeling project.
Should You Install a Wall-Mounted Toilet in Your Bathroom Remodel?
Of course, cleaning and maintenance are just two considerations when you're weighing the pros and cons of wall-mounted versus standard floor-mounted toilets. Here are some of the other points worth considering before you make a final decision.
Pros of a wall-mounted toilet
People who choose wall-mounted (or in-wall toilets) are fans of that fact that they are:
Space-savers. Since the toilet connects at the wall, rather than the floor, the tank is hidden from view. This opens up more floor space, which can make a smaller bathroom seem more spacious - similar to the visual effect of a wall-mounted vanity.
Contemporary in style. These are a favorite choice for those who like modern or transitional bathroom designs because it appears more streamline. Similarly, there are no pipes or extra parts to take up visual space since all of the water is behind the wall.
Installed at a customized height. Here is another bonus. While floor-mounted toilets are available in different height increments, wall-mounted toilets can be installed at just about any height that works for you - ideal for those who are taller than average, have physical considerations or who are disabled.
Easier to clean. As we mentioned above, they are much easier to clean and, for those who are fastidious, the mop can reach all the way under and around the base so there is no place for toilet-related moisture or grime to hide or build up.
Cons of a wall-mounted toilet
Of course, it's good to weigh the pros and cons, and there are some cons with these toilets.
They're expensive. Anyway you slice it, wall-mounted toilets will be notably more expensive than their standard counterparts and that price tag will go up depending on the toilet designer. Typically, you will spend at least double the price if not more.
More complex installation. In almost all cases, your bathroom will require some re-plumbing if you go the wall-mounted toilet route. The wall will also need to be reinforced since it is the wall that is supporting the weight of the toilet-sitter, rather than a strong porcelain base.
Higher maintenance requirements. When your standard toilet won't flush, you simply open up the tank and get to work. With a wall-mounted toilet, it's not that easy if you don't choose the right toilet. We recommend only looking at models with an access panel, so future maintenance doesn't require opening up the wall.
