It's always a good idea to see what's trending in the world of bathroom design when planning your own remodel. It's not that you want to copy another design. Quite the contrary, since you want your design to reflect your personal lifestyle and daily routine. However, paying attention to Chicago bathroom remodeling ideas can give you fresh inspiration and may inspire ideas you wouldn't have thought about otherwise.
Or, if you think you may be selling your home in the next 5 to 10 years, it may clue you in to the fact that one of your ideas is trending out - and better options are trending in.
Chicago Bathroom Remodeling Ideas Based on 2015 Trends
So, without further ado, let's look at the bathroom trends that have perked our interest based on this year's home and bath shows.
Is that a bathtub in your living room? Sometimes it takes the design world a little while to catch up with itself, and this is an example of that. About 20 years ago, there were nice bathroom remodels but nothing like the spa-esque spaces we design today. Currently, it's not unusual to see crystal chandeliers, ornate tile work and steam showers that make you want to stay in all day. In other words, bathrooms have been transformed into private living areas. Thus, we're seeing dressers-turned-vanities and other unconventional features that lend themselves more to a living room or bedroom than what used to be the bathroom.
How big can your shower get? Continuing with the idea of a bathroom as retreat space, showers are being designed as large as they possibly can be with a wide array of features, like multiple faucets, their own lighting plans and steam shower options (of course) to name a few, that turn the shower area into a retreat and relaxation center.
Bring on the natural finishes. We aren't going to list "sustainable bathroom features" as a rising trend because that has been the case for a few years now and will continue to be the case from here on out. However, an add-on to the sustainable trend is that bathroom fixtures are being made from more natural products. For example, we're seeing reclaimed lumber on the walls, living wall panel installations with succulent gardens and plants, poured concrete countertops with recycled rubber sinks and stone tiles that look like wood.
Enjoy your multi-media bathroom fixtures. Another trend taking the design world by storm (kitchens, baths and elsewhere) is the addition of smart technology that is embedded in unsuspecting places. The most notable example of this trend are electric mirrors that do everything from lighting up to providing the backdrop for embedded television screens, another example of how bathroom and living room spaces are merging.
Traditional bathroom designs are the minority. It isn't that traditional bathroom designs have disappeared, but we get more requests for "contemporary" bathroom designs that have more modern than traditional bathroom finishes, which are easier to clean and maintain than their traditional counterparts.
