Chicago Kitchen Remodeling: Ways to Make a White Kitchen Pop

Chicago Kitchen Remodeling - Making a white kitchen popThe all-white kitchen works for both traditional and modern designs. White kitchens are spacious and airy, and they are uncluttered and relaxing on the eyes.

The problem is that sometimes all that white can also create a too-blank or flat slate. There isn't enough depth, texture or interest to make it interesting. That is where these Chicago kitchen remodeling tips come into play.

Ideas For Making Your White Kitchen Pop

By adding a few design features that draw the eye, whether they provide contrast, a splash of color or unique textural elements will enhance a white kitchen design.

Create Contrast

One of the simplest ways to show off a monochromatic design - white or not - is to create one simple contrast. In the kitchen, for example, a dark floor will showcase white cabinetry and countertops without really interrupting the white design or taking over the scene.

Dark floors paired with white cabinets and countertops provide a very sleek, contemporary look and they can also work with a farmhouse kitchen, depending on the features you select.

Pop the Island

Using the island to provide color, contrast or some other element of surprise can also set your all-white kitchen up to shine. There are several ways to do this.

  • You can choose a different color or finish for the base of the island - something that can be repainted or refinished in a different color down the road when you're ready for a change.

  • Use a completely different countertop surface, like a wood butcher block, copper or stainless steel, which provides an interesting contrast and highlights the white all around it.

  • Leave the kitchen island white but then select a bold or bright color for the seating. This is another transitory way to add color, and it can be easily changed via upholstery, or swapping them out for new ones, when you're ready for a different color.

Have Fun With the Backsplash

We love the look of an all-white kitchen that has a fun, colorful backsplash to break things up between the countertop and upper-cabinets. Here's another place where you can have fun with texture too. The same color(s) can be echoed elsewhere, via island or raised-bar seating, a matching vase, artwork, etc.

Paint the Walls

Wall paint is another great way to feature a white kitchen design. A light blue or yellow will set off the white in a soft and lovely way if you like the traditional or more cottagey look. Bold and bright colors will do the same thing for more modern Chicago kitchen remodeling motifs.

Use Lighting Fixtures That Pop

The goal is to create the right type of contrast, one that highlights the white without taking it over. Lighting fixtures, particularly the suspended versions - like pendants over the island or the fixture hanging above your dine-in area - can be a great place to do this.
