Reasons You Might Want to Choose a Freestanding Island

Ron Nanberg | Tue, Sep 10, 2019 | Kitchen Remodeling

There’s no doubt that kitchen islands improve functionality in most Chicago kitchen designs, but that doesn’t mean a permanent installation is your best bet. There are plenty of scenarios where it makes more sense to use a freestanding island.

You have a smaller kitchen footprint

In some cases, a kitchen island on castors or one that is light enough to be moved easily, is the answer to a small kitchen’s needs. It can be moved into place when the cook or entertainer needs another prep or buffet service, but can be moved back along an available wall elsewhere in the home.

We’ve also seen plenty of homes where the portable kitchen island serves as a wet bar most of the time, but is used for larger event food prep before the party begins - instantly transforming back to a bar before guests arrive.

Create an open concept look

Most kitchen islands are designed for both surface area and storage, which means it’s a big block in the middle of the kitchen. If you prefer a minimalist or more open concept look, a free-standing island is a way to achieve it. Designed and built more like a table with a substantial top than a standard island, the trestle-effect allows a free-and-clear space around the frame.

A trestle-style, freestanding island also helps to make smaller kitchens appear larger.

You’re moving soon

Not sure how long you’re planning to be in your current home? A free-standing island gives you a way to remodel your kitchen with a look you love, AND it allows part of that investment – your custom, free-standing island – to go with you when you move into your new home.

Mix-up finishing materials

One smart way to mix up your kitchens finishing materials is to purchase a natural wood or metal, island-style kitchen organizer. It can be added as an extension (or perpendicular) to your permanent island. This also adds versatility for kitchen flow.

You love your kitchen flooring

Did you just install stunning hardwood floors? Did you intentionally choose a cool pattern for the wood or tiles, and hate to have it broken up? The space underneath the island remains free and clear, showing off your new investment.

You found an awesome piece of furniture you want to re-purpose

Sometimes, our clients find incredible pieces while out at the flea market or shopping online. It may be an antique dresser or a rustic counter or shelving piece from an old store or market. Whatever the case may be, adding a uniquely re-purposed furniture piece to your kitchen is a nice touch and can create a nice contrast to a mostly-modern kitchen design.

You can use it as a peninsula

Have a U-shaped kitchen design? Torn between whether you want an island or a peninsula? Some owners are loathe to give up that open central space, so a freestanding island is the answer.

If you love it as is, in the middle of the kitchen, you can leave it right where it is and be thankful. OR, you also have the option of moving it around to one of the U-legs, becoming an instant peninsula. This type of versatility is optimal for many busy households, where a kitchen’s function changes on an hourly basis – food prep and meals, home office, crafting, homework central, teenage watering hole, Friday night sports hangout, etc.

The team at Kitchens & Baths Unlimited is here to help you sort through all the functional details for your Chicago kitchen design. We’ll help you decide whether a freestanding island is your best bet, and we’re also happy to design and build a custom version. Schedule a consultation to get started.
