Surviving a Chicago Kitchen Remodeling Project

Ron Nanberg | Thu, Oct 23, 2014 | Kitchen Remodeling

Chicago Kitchen RemodelingTypically, kitchens are the most desirable place to begin your remodeling because they are the most used and visible area inside the home and are often the place where family and friends tend to congregate for social events. These same attributes can make them one of the most frustrating areas of the home to remodel.

Instructions on How to Survive Your Chicago Kitchen Remodeling Project Unscathed

The good news is that you can survive a Chicago Kitchen remodeling project, you just have to hire the right design and build team and then play your cards right.

  1. Choose the right remodeling contractor. The way you feel about your remodeling process from start to finish is wholly dependent on the design and build team you select to do the job. You can use our How-To Guide for Hiring a Kitchen Remodeling Contractor to help you get started. If they are organized, know their stuff and are easy to work with, you're experience will be much less stressful. The right team will keep you on task, assist you with materials selections and provide input whenever you need it. They will also be on top of local building codes and permit application processes as well as construction scheduling so you always know well in advance what is happening when. That will help you to prepare your home, family and pets for the upcoming interruptions and shifts in routine.

  2. Set up your back-up kitchen. A good design and build team will keep your kitchen "down time" to a minimum, but there will be times when electricity, gas and/or water to your kitchen appliances will have to be shut off or when your appliances will be missing altogether. Setting up a back-up kitchen is a great way to keep this from becoming a major frustration. Typically, the laundry room is a great place for this because - if you have a sink - you'll have water and electricity. If the weather is decent, you can always use your outdoor kitchen.

  3. Think on a smaller scale. Meal prep will have to happen on a smaller scale so begin planning meals that you can create using a microwave and toaster oven. There has never been a better time to get familiar with your local restaurants' to-go menus. Have them on hand or bookmark them online so you can pick up food or have it delivered when necessary.

  4. Boost your disposable stock. Clean-up can be a problem if your sinks are temporarily out of commission. Stock your temporary kitchen with disposable plates, bowls, cups and utensils. If sustainability is a focus for you, purchase biodegradable options.

  5. Be Prepared and Patient! Finally, know that this is only temporary. The more prepared you are for the reality of dust, noise and interruption - and the more patient you can be when these things are actually happening - the more you will be able to go with the flow and celebrate the gorgeous finished product.
