Contemporary Highland Park Kitchen Renovation
Kitchen Remodel Job Summary:
Contemporary Highland Park kitchen renovations strive for a sleek and streamlined look but that doesn't mean you have to shy away from mixed textures or a variety of materials and colors. The natural light that flows through this kitchen is refreshing and was important to maintain. The bonus being that an abundance of natural light allowed for darker cabinets. Even with a lower, 8-foot high ceiling the right amount of light ensures darker cabinetry doesn’t swallow you or make you feel like you're in a cave.
Cabinetry Style:
This kitchen implemented Grabill frameless custom cabinetry with a flat slab door style in a cherry wood species. The clear glass decorative doors at the top and flanking the hood can be used for everyday storage, but more often than not clients take advantage of glass inserts for display purposes and to add a colorful punch.
Cabinet Finish:
The Espresso finish is dominant these days and this kitchen used it on their cherry wood. Espresso is popular on several other wood species as well, including maple, hickory, rift cut oak and mahogany.
Counter Tops:
These owners selected two different countertops. The island has a granite slab with a built up laminated and mitred edge detail to beef it up to 2.5-inches thick, matching the thickness of the perimeter countertops that are done in quartz. Quartz is popular because it is sustainable, virtually indestructible and easy to maintain. Note: the island sink is made from five pieces of matching granite counter top to provide a unique look and continuity.
Backsplash:
This backsplash was done with porcelain tiles, which are easy to maintain and clean if you cook regularly. The limestone gray tiles are referred to as "sticks" and typically come on a 12x12 mosaic sheet that make for easier installation. The grout is also minimal, another low-maintenance feature.
Details:
Some of the details that "make" this kitchen renovation include the 7-foot wide custom stainless steel hood that becomes the focal point of the kitchen, adding both interest and functionality. Underneath is the 36-inch Wolf range top with red knobs - always a plus - with the griddle in the middle. Another nice detail is the custom matching wood panels on the fridge that provides a nice balance of stainless steel and wood.
