Contemporary Northbrook Kitchen Renovation
Job Summary:
Our client was an empty nester who loves to have fun with color, texture and materials. She wasn't interested in a cookie cutter approach and neither are we, which made for a great match! She wanted to do something different, and we took that to heart with every finish option - from exotic veneer cabinetry to colorful lighting fixtures. We approached this project as if her kitchen were an accessory to her home, the way customized jewelry finishes an outfit. Even the circles for hardware are in varying sizes.
Cabinetry Style:
In our book, contemporary kitchens almost always require frameless cabinetry to maintain a smooth, uncluttered appearance. We installed frameless, fully custom cabinetry that is grain aligned. It's a warm contemporary look but remains sleek and clean.
Cabinet Finish:
The cabinet finish is an exotic wood veneer in a natural stain or finish. ¼ sawn walnut with horizontal grain.
Counter Tops:
For the countertops, our client selected a 3 cm Brown Antique granite with a square polished edge detail. The corners are slightly softened to eliminate sharp edges.
Backsplash:
This stylized backsplash is composed of circular pieces of porcelain in different colors and sizes, set on a mesh sheet that typically comes 12"x12". Because of the circles there is a more space in between them, requiring more grout than square mosaic tiles. This means its especially important to seal grout every year, especially kitchens that are being cooked in.
Flooring:
We refinished the existing 2-1/4-inch wide, light stained oak plank flooring to match the existing flooring throughout the main level.
Additional Features:
A microwave drawer is a nice option if you would rather not sacrifice the storage in a wall cabinet, or you prefer a more integrated kitchen aesthetic. The wine cubbies are fun and add interest like the frosted glass cabinet doors do. Frosted glass doors introduce a new texture and material into the space but, at the same time, they're a nice alternative to clear glass as you don’t really see the cabinet interiors. Instead, you may see shadows or colors for added interest.
The owner had a collection of colorful glass and art pieces so we left display space between the cabinets and ceiling. Pendant lights also do a nice job of bringing in a punch of color.
