Deerfield Transitional Kitchen Renovation
Project Summary:
It was time for our clients' kitchen to be opened up and is an example of how little changes go a long way. All we did was remove soffits, a pantry closet and a diagonal double wall that made the room feel closed. Although the room itself isn't much bigger, these changes give the impression of three extra feet, which is a lot of visual space.
The kitchen opens up to the eating area and family room, which is great for this young family. Some changes to the lighting design, including recessed cans and a decorative chandelier, added desired elegance as well.
Cabinetry:
We installed fully-custom frameless cabinets, made by Grabill out of Indiana, with a transitional, flat center-panel door style called Old Towne. The finish is a matte white paint (Glacier) on maple wood and the island is cherry with a Cognac stain.
Counter Tops:
The perimeter counters are Saraceno marble with a standard thickness of 3cm and a standard eased edge detail. The island is a Calcutta Quartzite with a built up, 2.5-inch thick edge detail (6cm). Sometimes a fabricator will take two pieces of 3cm slab and stack one on top of the other, leaving a visible seam running through the face of the thicker edge - not so appealing. The better option is to put the seam at the top edge where the front piece meets the top piece, makes the counter top material look like it really is 2.5-inches thick. We call this a mitred laminated edge detail.
Backsplash:
We applied a Calcutta subway tile laid in a brick, or staggered, pattern with a nice bullnose piece to finish all exposed edges. The entire backsplash was sealed since this is a "cooking kitchen."
Flooring:
This home had existing wood flooring so we retained that to add more money to the budget elsewhere. We did patch the areas where structures had been removed and the entire thing was refinished so the flooring looks brand new.
Appliances:
To improve the kitchen layout, we installed a Wolf 48-inch range, which provides the client two ovens in a different configuration than her previous double wall ovens. The 48-inch range allows for 6 burners and a griddle for the stove top. Wolf's signature red knobs can be substituted for black if you prefer. The Subzero integrated fridge and freezer match the cabinetry, providing a sleek and custom look.
