Highland Park | Laundry Room Remodel

Highland Park Laundry Room Remodel

Job Summary:

Our clients for this Highland Park laundry room remodel were tired of going back and forth from the main floor to the basement to do laundry. They have small children so a laundry/mudroom on the main level made more sense. This room was wholly designed with convenience, practicality and durability in mind.

Cabinetry Style:

To keep a warm feel, the owners selected contemporary frameless maple laundry room cabinets in a slab-door style. This is a popular choice for Highland Park residences desiring a clean, sleek look.  Since she has boys, the homeowner decided against white, opting for cabinets that hide dirt and smudges a little better.

Cabinet Finish:

The maple cabinets have a Nutmeg finish to coordinate with the “keys,” or decorative inserts, in the floor tile. We used a durable factory finish, easy to clean with just warm water and mild soap (always refer to manufacturer's instructions as very few cabinets require oiling, polishing, or heavy cleaners).

Counter Tops:

Cambria crushed quartz man-made counter tops are ideal for laundry room applications, where counters become a catch-all. They are stain-proof and do not require sealing or maintenance. If you have front-load washers/dryers, run the counter top over the units to provide a folding and landing area.  Note: counter dimensions will be a couple inches higher/deeper than standard, but it's well-worth it.

Backsplash:

Keeping it clean and contemporary, like Highland Park homeowners so often do, means extending the counter top up the backsplash. The wall paint is protected and the surface is easy to clean.

Flooring:

We recommended 13x13 Porcelain tile for ease of cleaning and maintenance, rather than real stone tile. For this laundry room remodel, the tile was laid at an angle, to create the illusion of more space in the long and narrow room. We set the tiles in a staggered pattern, inserting 1x1 mosaic glass keys, adding color and interest.

Mud Room Cubbies:

Mudrooms should incorporate bench-seating with cubbies whenever possible. Since guests often use this entrance, the owner wanted a shelf at the top of the wall cabinetry to display nice vases and step the decor. Using a colorful and/or patterned custom cushion for the bench finishes off the space and makes it more unique. Open cubbies allow easy access for shoes, storage of baskets or other decorative items. You could also use this space for drawers, rather than cubbies, for hidden storage.
