Basement Remodel | Northbrook
JOB SUMMARY:
Why have a dark, dank basement when you can remodel it and make the basement something special? That's exactly what our Northbrook clients thought. Now that our work is complete, it doesn’t feel like a basement anymore and they refer to it as the lower-level.
The new ceilings are 9-feet high, the space is inviting and it gets used on a regular basis. Their basement is an extension of the house rather than just a place to store “stuff.”
Their new lower-level is used to entertain on sports days for adults with the bar, but it's also a space where the kids hang out and play with friends after school. Video games, billiards and lounging - this remodeled basement is a relaxing place to have some fun.
CABINETRY:
We used fully custom stainless steel and copper frameless cabinets with clear glass inserts. The textured copper metal inserts in the top wall cabinet doors are from Chemetal. Chemetal also offers magnetic chalkboard inserts that are fun for kids and handy to have in the laundry room and kitchens. The cabinet door style on the base cabinetry is a slab, or flat panel, door style. However, if you want a glass doors or doors with an insert, you can choose the width of the framing for the wall cabinet doors.
COUNTER TOP:
The bar countertops are 1 1/4-inch Soapstone with an eased edge detail to maintain clean lines that are consistent the sleek bar. A 4-inch high matching Soapstone backsplash and transition extend from the counter height to the bar height for continuity. The raised bar is 40.5-inches rather than the 36.5-inch standard for kitchens, requiring bar-height stools.
FLOORING:
While most of the space has carpet for a warmer ambiance, we laid 13x13 Porcelain tiles on the diagonal on the interior side of the bar for easier cleanup.
APPLIANCES:
On the interior of the bar resides a dishwasher, pullout waste basket and two fridge drawers. The fridge drawers are ideal for adult beverages, water or kids' drink boxes and soda. Keeping the main necessities - plates, bowls, cups and silverware - in the lower-level saves a lot of time and steps, hence the dishwasher too!
LIGHTING:
This basement has many purposes which requires a flexible lighting plan. We installed four pendants for fun, color, texture and accent/mood lighting, acting as the jewels in the space. There are also 5-inch, dimmable recessed Juno light fixtures in the ceiling. The more light the better as it can always be dimmed down if need be. The wall cabinets have LED undercabinet lighting for night lighting or ambiance.
