Northbrook Contemporary Kitchen Design
Job Summary:
The "Bigger is Better" home building trend can lead to impersonal, cavernous spaces if homes aren't designed well. While a spacious kitchen is nice, you also want to create a feeling of hominess. To achieve that, this kitchen space uses a darker stain, which also anchors the high, 9-foot ceiling. Instead of making the room seem squatty by stopping the cabinets at the typical 8-foot mark, the decision was made to take the cabinets up to the ceiling by adding glass cubes across the top for consistency and décor.
Cabinetry Style:
Contemporary kitchen designs are all about clean lines. Therefore, KitchenCraft semi-custom frameless cabinetry is showcased here. The Summit door-style is a flat-slab veneered door-style in the Integra series.
Cabinet Finish:
The Summit door-style has a Cappuccino finish on maple wood. KitchenCraft has a large selection of standard finishes on maple, cherry, alder, and oak. Other wood species available are rift cut oak, natural white oak and bamboo. They also offer thermofoil/melamine options.
Counter Tops:
3 cm Autumn Leaf granite is displayed here with an eased-edge detail. A 12-inch overhang on the back of the island for the comfort of counter height stools along the back. In addition to a spillover eating area or a buffet surface for larger gatherings, kitchen bars are the perfect spot for your morning coffee/paper or a Homework Central for the kids.
Backsplash:
To complement the colors and accents in the granite slab, a 12x12 porcelain tile with a metallic finish was selected, offering some shimmer and multi-dimensional effects. Larger tiles mean minimal grout for easier cleaning and maintenance. Porcelain doesn't require sealing and it doesn't stain, so it's a great option for kitchen backsplashes, especially behind the stove where grease, sauces, water droplets, etc., fly.
Flooring:
The owners chose wood plank oak flooring in a similar color family as the rest of the material selections. However, a lighter tone was purposefully selected for separation between the floor and cabinets.
Additional features:
The wine rack is different from the typical cubbies or “X” formation. Pendant lights introduce a new color which is refreshing. The upper glass-cubed cabinet lighting is nice to show off attractive items and add a little more color. Notice you too can stain your pantry door and casings to match the cabinets and keep it consistent.
