Northbrook Traditional Kitchen Remodel
Job Summary:
If you're familiar with our projects, you've noticed much our work is for clients interested in contemporary kitchen designs. However, this client wanted her suburban kitchen to have a country feel. Her house is an old, farmhouse-style home, and she wanted a kitchen in line with its architectural roots.
The goal of a traditional kitchen design is to make your family, friends and guests feel at home, casual and comfortable, and we're confident that we accomplished that with this Northbrook kitchen remodel.
Cabinet style:
Often, traditional kitchen cabinets have a reputation for being too busy. This doesn't have to be the case. Keep clean and uncluttered aesthetics, while preserving a traditional look using frameless cabinets with minimal trim accents. Our client went with frameless Bremtown custom cabinetry. The doors have a recessed flat-center panel with applied molding on the frame. The applied molding gives the door a little more dimension, hence that traditional look.
Cabinet finish:
The maple wood perimeter cabinets were finished with a Burnt Sugar stain. The maple island has a weathered-green stain, adding a little color and interest, since the other colors are more consistent and neutral. Even the wall paint is neutral and non-committal, providing a great foundation for mix-and-matching cabinet and island colors.
Counter tops:
For the perimeter and island counter tops we used 1-1/4-inch thick Colonial Cream granite with an ogee edge detail.
Backsplash:
To complement the countertops but add a decorative accent, we used a tumbled 2x2 marble stone with an old world feel. In the middle of the backsplash, behind the cooktop, we installed a metal decorative accent that serves as a contrasting focal point.
Flooring:
It's hard to design a farmhouse kitchen without a hardwood floor. This owner selected stained oak hardwood flooring to match the Burnt Sugar perimeter of the cabinetry for fluidity.
Additional features:
It's the little details that really matter in a design. Note the decorative mullions on the glass cabinet inserts flanking the wood hood. Also, the corbels (decorative brackets) alongside the undersides of the hood are a nice traditional touch. We added a valance toe kick underneath the cooktop and installed a cookbook case on the back of the island. These extra features make a kitchen design uniquely yours.
